About Durham Bat Group

Durham Bat Group is the umbrella body for the licensed bat workers in County Durham and exists to promote the conservation and study of bats in our area. We cover the area between the Tyne and the Tees plus those areas of North Yorkshire that are in the current administrative county of Durham. Durham Bat Group organizes meetings, surveys and training activities to enable trainees to gain bat licenses.   Other meetings support the work of those who wish to be actively involved in the care, protection, study and conservation of bats. As time permits, members also lead guided walks, give talks and organize other activities to promote bat conservation.

The most important tasks of the bat group are

• manning a 24 hour on-call rota to deal with bat problems throughout the breeding season
• liaison with planning authorities to ensure that bat conservation is considered with all developments in our area.
• caring for, rehabilitating and releasing orphaned and injured bats.
• study of bats in our area, including monitoring of key roosts and hibernacula.

There is no membership fee but members are expected to keep themselves informed and play an active part in group activities.

Durham bat group hold regular meetings in the last week of each month.
